Why Funders Need 4 Months of Bank Statements (and What They Look For)

Updated · By the Swiftline Funding team

When you apply for a merchant cash advance, your business bank statements matter more than almost anything else. Here’s why funders ask for them, what they look for and how to make sure yours help — not hurt — your application.

Why bank statements matter so much

Merchant cash advances are repaid from your future revenue. Your bank statements are the most reliable proof of what that revenue actually is. Unlike tax returns, which can be a year old, the last four months of statements show how your business is performing right now.

What funders look for

1. Average monthly deposits

This is the biggest factor in how much you can get. Funders total your true business revenue deposits (excluding transfers between your own accounts and loan proceeds) and average them.

2. Consistency

Steady deposits month after month are a strong signal. Big swings aren’t automatically a problem — especially in seasonal industries — but funders want to understand them.

3. Average daily balance

A healthy balance shows a cash cushion that can support daily or weekly payments.

4. Negative days and overdrafts

Frequent overdrafts suggest cash flow stress and are one of the most common reasons for smaller offers or declines.

5. Existing advances and loans

Funders look for recurring debits from other funders and lenders. Always disclose existing positions — they’ll be visible anyway.

6. Number of deposits

Many small deposits (like daily card settlements) show an active customer base.

How to prepare your statements

  • Download official PDFs from your online banking — not screenshots or spreadsheets
  • Include every page, even blank or summary pages
  • Provide the four most recent complete months — if it’s mid-month, a month-to-date statement can help
  • Use your business account — personal account statements usually don’t count
  • Include all business accounts if you split revenue across more than one

Is it safe to upload bank statements?

Yes, when you use a secure application. Our application encrypts your documents in transit and stores them privately. They’re shared only with our funding partner, which reviews your application. Read our Privacy Policy for details.
